The Layer of Nonsense in Modern IT
Why More Tools Don’t Lead to Better Understanding
Modern IT didn’t become complex overnight.
It became nonsensical slowly — one reasonable decision at a time.
A new tool.
Another dashboard.
A “best practice.”
A certification.
A bundle.
None of these choices were irrational on their own. But stacked together, they created something familiar to anyone who works in IT today:
A layer of nonsense that sits between people and reality.
What I Mean by “Nonsense”
Not stupidity.
Not incompetence.
Not bad intentions.
Nonsense is what happens when systems produce outputs that look authoritative but no longer help people understand what’s actually happening.
It shows up as:
Dashboards that are precise but misleading
Tickets that are complete but unhelpful
Alerts that demand action without context
AI summaries that sound confident but explain nothing
Processes that are followed perfectly and still come up short
Everyone is busy.
Everything is “working.”
But the system has been broken into so many small pieces that no one can really see the whole.
This sensible atomization of information has pixelated reality. We have more detail than ever — and less understanding of what it adds up to.
That’s nonsense.
How the Layer Gets Built
The layer of nonsense isn’t designed.
It accumulates.
It forms when we repeatedly choose:
structure over understanding
speed over interpretation
tools over thinking
standardization over context
Each choice makes sense locally.
Together, they create systems where meaning has to fight to survive.
We don’t notice the loss right away because information keeps flowing.
But information flow is not the same thing as understanding.
The Original Mistake
Modern IT solved the problem of information transmission.
We got very good at:
storing data
moving it quickly
sharing it widely
summarizing it automatically
And we quietly assumed something else would happen:
If information moves efficiently, understanding will take care of itself.
It didn’t.
Understanding requires:
context
intent
judgment
interpretation
responsibility
None of which scale cleanly through tools.
So we built systems that move symbols beautifully — and preserve meaning poorly.
Why More Tools Make It Worse
When things stop making sense, the default response is always the same:
“We need better visibility.”
So we add:
another tool
another dashboard
another layer of reporting
another AI assistant
Each one promises clarity.
Each one adds noise.
Tools can’t tell you:
what matters
what can be ignored
what’s uncertain
what assumptions are baked in
what will be expensive to undo later
Only people can do that.
When There’s No Safe Place to Disagree
Here’s the part that makes the layer of nonsense so hard to remove.
Modern systems don’t just structure work — they enforce compliance with their structure.
Required fields.
Mandatory statuses.
Binary choices.
Workflow gates.
They don’t ask, “What’s really going on?”
They ask, “Can you give me an answer that fits?”
So when reality doesn’t fit cleanly, people are forced into a false choice:
Comply — and distort reality to satisfy the system
Resist — and be labeled non-compliant, difficult, or obstructive
There is no safe, sanctioned place to say:
“This is uncertain”
“This assumption is wrong”
“The problem is framed incorrectly”
Doubt becomes deviance.
Judgment looks like delay.
So thoughtful people learn to self-censor — not because they agree, but because the system has no language for disagreement.
This is how nonsense stops being questioned and starts being institutionalized.
Why Small Teams Still Win
This is why small, colocated teams consistently outperform larger, better-tooled organizations.
Not because they’re smarter.
Because they share context.
Meaning doesn’t have to survive a system.
It lives in conversation, tone, and proximity.
They don’t eliminate complexity.
They repair meaning continuously, before nonsense has time to accumulate.
Large systems try to replace that with tools.
It doesn’t work.
The Cost You Actually Pay
The layer of nonsense doesn’t show up on a balance sheet.
It shows up as:
rework
frustration
decision fatigue
quiet mistrust
“how did this happen?”
“didn’t we already decide this?”
It’s paid in human energy.
The most expensive part is this:
People stop trusting their own judgment.
They defer to the system — even when it doesn’t make sense — because challenging it feels risky.
That’s how nonsense becomes normal.
What to Do: How to Thin the Layer of Nonsense
You don’t have to fight your systems to reduce nonsense.
You just have to change how meaning enters them.
1. Add One Sentence of “Why”
Whenever you create a ticket, document, status update, or AI prompt, add one sentence that answers:
Why does this matter right now?
Future readers don’t need more data.
They need orientation.
2. Make One Assumption Visible
Before closing a decision or handing work off, write down one assumption you’re making.
You don’t need all of them.
One is enough to slow false certainty.
3. Preserve One Uncertainty
Resist the urge to make everything sound final.
If something is unclear, say so — calmly and explicitly.
“This looks right, but we don’t yet know how X will behave.”
Hidden uncertainty causes more damage than visible uncertainty ever does.
4. Ask One Question Before Automating
Before you automate or standardize something, ask:
What problem is this actually solving?
Automation locks in assumptions.
Make sure they’re ones you’re willing to live with.
5. Use Checklists — Don’t Surrender to Them
Checklists are powerful when the situation is stable and repeatable.
When it isn’t, rely on judgment — and say that you are.
“This falls outside the checklist. Here’s how I’m thinking about it.”
That sentence protects the work and the people doing it.
A Final Thought
Information isn’t as complicated as we’ve made it.
It’s a signal.
In a context.
For a purpose.
At a moment in time.
Everything else is scaffolding.
When the scaffolding gets so thick that no one can see the signal anymore, the problem isn’t information.
It’s nonsense.
And the solution isn’t another layer.
It’s care.
